Mandate:FAO is the United Nations' specialized agency mandated to raise levels of nutrition, improve agricultural productivity, better the lives of rural populations and contribute to the growth of the world economy.

At glance:
- Established in Kosovo to implement emergency and development projects.
- FAO commenced its emergency response in Kosovo to help restore agricultural and livestock production to pre-conflict levels and at the same time assist the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) to establish the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development (DAFRD) by providing technical assistance, training and data management systems.
- Rehabilitation strategy centered on strengthening the institutional capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development (MAFRD) in the following areas:
- Supporting the development and implementation of agricultural policy;
- Increasing and broadening the capacity of veterinary and livestock support services;
- Reducing the dependence on imported staple crop seeds, stimulating the formation and activities of farmer/producer associations, and developing sustainable forest resource management capability;
- FAO is continuing to work in Kosovo and is implementing the following projects:
- GCP/RER/019/LUX Development Assistance to Farmers in Remote Areas of Montenegro and Kosovo cross-border project encompassing the Sharri Mountains falling within the Dragash/Dragas, Prizren and Shterpce/Strpce municipalities together with the Peja/Pec mountainous regions. Overall objective is to Increase livestock owners standards of living and being achieved principally but not exclusively through technical assistance, demonstration and training of farmer-owned and managed groups and associations.
- OSRO GLO 604 UK BABY 01 - Avian influenza
- The main objective of the project is to reinforce the national and regional capacity for early warning and early reaction to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza outbreaks within the Balkan region with a particular focus on strengthening of surveillance and monitoring.
- TCP/KOS/3101 Establishment of a land resources information system for sustainable land use; The project aims at establishing the framework for a multi - scale national land resource information system and places emphasis on the application of the database in land use planning and land management.
