GO FOR THE GOAL:END CHILD LABOUR
16 June 2010

The World Day Against Child Labour was marked in Kosovo with a range of activities including the grassroots football and other sport games outside school hours in 5 elementary schools in Prishtina, Gjilan and Prizren with 150 children at risk and children involved in WFCL. The crowning event took place on 12 June 2010 in the stadium of “2 Korriku”, Dragodan, Prishtina. A visit to the Kosovo Assembly was organised by United Nations Kosovo Team preceding to the 12 June, World Day Against Child Labour, where a group of 6 children met with the Assemvly Committee for Health, Work and Social Welfare and talked about their concernes related to child labour problem read more

GLOBAL OPEN DAY:PARTNERSHIP FOR PEACE

On the occasion of the “Global Open Day: Partnership for Peace” Kosovo women peace leaders and advocates lead by Ms. Edita Tahiri, lead by Ms. Edita Tahiri, Minister of Public Administration and the chair of South East Europe Regional Women’s Lobby for Peace Security met today with the UN Development Coordinator, Ms. Osnat Lubrani and UN Heads of Agencies to mark 10th Anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution (SCR) 1325. read more

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL MESSAGE ON WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY
31 May 2010

This year’s observance of World No Tobacco Day focuses on "Gender and tobacco, with an emphasis on marketing to women". Although fewer than one out of ten women are smokers, that still adds up to an estimated 200 million women around the world. Moreover, that number could grow, since the tobacco industry is spending heavily on advertisements that target women and associate tobacco use with beauty and liberation. According to a recent study by the World Health Organization, the number of girls and boys who smoked was about equal in half the 151 countries surveyed. read more

United Nations Development Coordinator Ms. Osnat Lubrani together with the Norwegian Ambassador in Kosovo, Mr. Sverhe Johan Hvale, the mayor of Gjakova/Djakovica municipality, and UNHCR official in Kosovo, Mr. Mbili Ambaoumba, inaugurated the Millennium Development Goals and Social Activities Corner at the Gjakova/Djakovica Regional Library. read more

United Nations Kosovo Team launches a journalism competition for the best Kosovo reporting story on poverty

On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day 2010, the United Nations Kosovo Team (UNKT) launches a journalism competition for the best Kosovo reporting story on poverty. The year 2010 marks the fifth anniversary of the Journalism Poverty Prize, awarded by UNKT, which is aimed to raise the awareness on poverty situation in Kosovo, to promote the work and the role media have in fighting poverty, and to encourage and motivate journalists to report more on poverty related issues that Kosovo is facing today. read more

Two months after the earthquake in Haiti the full scale of the disaster has become clear, as have the challenges facing those working in the country. The catastrophe took the lives of tens of thousands, injured thousands more and left up to a million people living out in the open or in damaged or makeshift shelters. read more
