POVERTY ERADICATION WEEK 2009
9 October 2009

The year 2009 marks the fourth anniversary of Poverty Eradication Week in Kosovo. This year, the Poverty Eradication Week will be marked with a series of information, advocacy, and awareness raising activities, bringing together the government, the Kosovo Assembly, civil society, private sector, media, artists, and other relevant local and international partners to join efforts to fight poverty and contribute to human development.

Only with your Voice and Action, together we can end poverty” is the slogan of the week that will be spread across Kosovo through more than 15 central events. These events will take place in the assembly of Kosovo, at youth centers and theatres, in universities and schools, in cities and villages.

The message will be echoed by radio, newspaper, internet and TV. An Poverty Eradication TV Spot, financed by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, will broadcast throughout the week,  calling for the actions that would contributeto poverty reduction and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

The Poverty Eradication Week will open on 17 October, on the International Day for Poverty Eradication Day, through a nomination ceremony of a Goodwill Champion for the achievement of Millenium Development Goals.

A two-day conference to increase knowledge of all stakeholders on issues to do with MDG gaps and policy measures. The conference will use international experience for Kosovo’s EU integration, and will report on Kosovo’s progress towards achieving the MDGs.

Young people will be involved throughout the Poverty Eradication Week, including through the set of two special theatre performances promoting human rights and raising awareness on HIV/AIDS, crowning with youth theatre festival on HIV/AIDS prevention. By using web-based activities, youth will be invited to participate in a photo and essay competition on the ways they could contribute to poverty reduction. The web discussion forum will make possible online youth communication and provide opportunity for them to speak out their needs and propose desirable action.

Open debates on the health of mother and child will take place with relevant stakeholders and journalist, aiming to advocate and raise the awareness for the need to continuously foster the efforts in supporting woman empowerment, a cornerstone for poverty reduction. Further, the Poverty Eradication message will be promoted through a set of radio broadcast that would relate to reproductive health issues.

The week will conclude on 23 October, marking UN Day, with an awards ceremony for the UNKT Journalism Poverty Prize.  This prize aims to encourage journalists to understand and report more on poverty and its impact on the daily lives of people.
